Pay a visit to a small farming village perched in the foothills of the Mountains and experience making traditional preservation food like dried persimmons or Japanese pickles together with the local grannies. Autumn is a bountiful season with many fresh ingredients, both from the harvests and the woods. Learn from the locals the best way to cook them and prepare typical seasonal delicacies such as miso soup with Jikobo mushrooms and agar cakes with walnuts and tofu.

Hike along Yokoya Gorge through bubbling waterfalls and autumn foliage. Make sure to go up to Yokoya Kannon Observation spot to see the two-tiered Outaki fall surrounded by hues of red, yellow, and green. The scenery from up there looks straight out of an impressionist painting.

Tateshina Ai is a small high-end onsen ryokan in the Tateshina area. It has two private open-air hot spring baths, and the food served at dinner in the form of a kaiseki course meal is a work of art, both delicious and pleasing to the eye.
Daitoen is a small family-run inn where you can savor local cuisine and wild game. Originally an old folk-house, the inn is a beautiful example of traditional architecture with massive wooden beams and a large irori (hearth) in the main hall. There are two hot spring baths that can be used privately.
Traditional onsen ryokan with a nice view of Yokoya Gorge. The onsen is a unique iron spring with healing red waters. In addition to the large common baths, there is also one bath that can be used privately.
Cycle across the old farming villages which stand on the foot of the Yatsugatake Mountains. The ride will take you through fields with rice hanging to dry in the sun and lovely hamlets with traditional old folk-houses and Kura storehouses before ending at Taruhime Fall. A short walk to the falls and then a Shuttle ride back to Yatsugatake Cycling. This is an easy course, mainly downhill, suitable for everyone.

A small cafe run by a local couple inside a renovated old folk-house. They have only one menu which features a selection of typical seasonal dishes. Enjoy a delicious lunch, and don't forget to ask for desserts. We recommend their selection of tenyose, elegant and colorful cakes made with agar.
