Alex Kerr has called Sasahara a “hidden gem,” a place that miraculously withstood modernization thanks to its position up in the mountains. And this hamlet indeed looks out of an old Japanese tale. Here among antique Kura storehouses, terraced fields, and gurgling streams, you can still experience the romance of “lost Japan.”
And who better to guide you than one of the villagers. It will be like a treasure hunt, looking for cute small shrines, funny plaster-relief drawings, and beautiful natural landscapes.

A few steps away from Sasahara village, there is a lovely cafe where you can enjoy a steaming cup of coffee while browsing through pottery and woodcraft. Lunch is made using plenty of locally grown vegetables, and both food and beverages are served in cups and plates made by the owner, who is a pottery craftsman himself.

You can choose whether to have this experience inside your farmhouse or go to the grannie's house instead.
The activity begins with a short seasonal task such as picking wild veggies in spring, making dry persimmons in autumn, and more. Local food culture is attuned to the cycle of the seasons, so what you get to do changes greatly depending on the time of year. Then, after a brief introduction to the ingredients and menu of the day, it's cooking time. You will prepare 3~4 seasonal dishes. Your meal could include countryside-style rice cakes covered in savory edamame paste, colorful and refreshing agar cakes, tofu soup with hand-made miso, and much more.
For the second day, you can change breakfast, switch to western-style if you had Japanese-style, and vice versa. If you choose the same type, though, you will still have a totally different selection of dishes. The cook will make sure not to serve the same food two days in a row.
Our staff will pick you up from the farmhouse and accompany you to Chino Station or your next destination if it's nearby.
