A performance to the gods

Japanese drum performance at an Edo Period rural stage

Price: JPY 51,220/group Duration: 2 hr

Activities

Experience the euphoria of a traditional festival

Once upon a time, almost every village in Chino had a stage that was both a place of worship and entertainment. The villagers, who were both entertainers and spectators, would perform during festivals held in honor of the god protecting the village. With time the stages slowly disappeared, substituted by television, but one still stands after more than two centuries. That's the setting for our activity.
The guides of this experience are the members of Senryu Daiko, a group of locals who protect the traditional art of Suwa Drums- one of Japan’s oldest styles, where different types of drums are combined to form an orchestra. After learning the history and basics of the Suwa drums, you will rehearse together a song which you will then perform on stage. This activity also involves a guided tour of the village.
